Mike Martz is coming, Mike Martz is coming, Mike Ma...What's that? He's not coming? Uh, never mind...

You know all that hot air vented by Lions fans going apeshit over the pluses and minuses of having Mike Martz as offensive coordinator? Remember all that was written by experts that supposedly have the inside scoop? Do you recall the first reports were Martz to the Lions was not close to a done deal, then just as suddenly, it was just a matter of dotting the I's and crossing the T's?

Forget we ever mentioned it...

In some ways I'm almost relieved Martz is not coming. We know all too well the mad scientist, overconfident, legend in his own mind Mike Martz. The Mike Martz that would have we fans curled up in the fetal position after a Lions loss asking why he called a double reverse pass from the opposition 20 on 3rd and short. And you know that was going to happen... We would curse the day Martz signed a contract.

Then I think of the Super Bowl winning, acknowleged offensive genius, made Kurt Warner into an all world QB Mike Martz and wonder what could have been... Martz was probably salivating at the thought of having all that untapped skill position talent waiting to be molded by a talented offensive mind. The idea that Joey Harringon could throw for 4000 yards, Kevin Jones rush for 1500 yards and catch 50 passes, and seeing the "3 Divas" running wild in the secondary may not have been all that far fetched to think about with Martz running the offense. We would fondly remember the day Martz signed a contract.

Alas, for better or worse, it's never going to be.

It becoming more than obvious that the Fords refused to open their wallet to Martz's satisfaction. Surprising, considering what top coordinators are currently getting on the open market. William Clay Ford isn't afraid to have 2 head coaches under contract, but won't pony up a little extra for Martz? Do you hear that? Do you? Listen closely... It's sport talk radio callers bringing up the ghost of Russ Thomas...

The flirtation's over. All parties will move on. The Lions still don't have an offensive coordinator. Whomever they hire won't have the cachet of Martz and will be known as not their first choice. Typical Lions...

So in the end, I'm still not sure if I should be happy or not. I feel like I've been jilted by a cute chick even though I never actually asked her out. Tell me, does that makes sense? Then again, I'm a Lions fan and nothing EVER makes sense.
