That sound you just heard?

It was from jaws hitting the floor all across NHL-land (including mine) when the news broke that the Red Wings signed Marian Hossa to a 1 year (!), $7.4 million deal.  So much for waiting too see what 2nd-3rd line forwards would be left after the early free agent rush.

All I can say is...WOW! I thought the Wings would get a forward, but the 5 time All Star Hossa? Not in my wildest dreams did I expect such an impact signing. Even better, the Hossa deal being for such a short term, it should still allow the Wings to sign Z and The Mule to long-term extensions. They get the best of both worlds, signing an All Star quality forward without having to lose their homegrown stars. It's a neat trick, when you can pull it off. In other words, Ken Holland pwns even Harry Houdini.

Damn, they have to be crushed in Pittsburgh. First the Wings sign Penguins back up goalie Ty Conklin (a very nice signing, by the way), now Hossa? I think we can add the Pengiuns fanbase to the ever growing list (led by fans of the Avs, Blues, and Preds) of those who utterly despise the Red Wings.

With Marian Hossa becoming a Red Wing, Detroit's best run franchise just solidified their status as the NHL's best team, both on and off the ice. And the most hated, as well.

  1. Don't forget the Hawks fans. We hate the Wings just as much, if not more than those other fans.

    Campbell and Huet!

  2. I've been walking around all day periodically snickering quietly to myself. My coworkers must think I'm nuts, but I don't care. :)

(BTW, thanks for bringing back the 1987 memories of the Minnesota Twinkies and their Marshmallowdome. Hate them, hate them, hate them. Grrrrr......)

  3. Hockey players must be programmed differently than other pro athletes. Compare Hossa with, say, Baron Davis, who just signed a mega-contract with the Clippers. Who, in their right mind -- for anything other than money -- would go to the Clippers? If Hossa follwed Davis' example, he would have signed on with the Islanders.
